Fredrik
C. Qvistgaard arrived in the United States in 1904, he
established residence in Jersey City, New Jersey. After getting
himself settled at 351 Communipaw Avenue, Jersey City, he became
an apprentice electrician. After serving his apprenticesship and
becoming an Electrician, he attended a technical to further about
his trade. Upon completion of the technical school training he
graduated as an Electrical Technician. He then went to work for
the A. B. See Elevator Company, where he worked at the wiring of
the switchboards for automatic elevators. He worked on the wiring
of the first automatic self leveling electric elevator.
On 25 September, 1906 Fredrik filed with U. S. Gobernment his
intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, stating
that he arrived in the U. S. on 15 March, 1904, several years
later he was ad-mitted as a citizen by the Common pleas court in
Jersey City, N. J.
Fredrik became a member of the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church
in Jersey City, he sang in the church choir, and played the
trumpet in the churches musical quarted.
On 27 May, 1916 Fredrik married Henrietta E. Swanson, daughter of
Andrew and Elna Swanson of Eslor,
Sweden, Elna Swanson was the former Elna Anderson of Eslor,
Sweden. Emelie Thylen, Henrietta's sister, and Nils Thylen,
Emelie's husband, were bridesmaid and best man at the wedding.
Fredrik and Henrietta were married in the Swe-dish Methodist
Episeopal Church, by Rev. Algot Wilson, Pastor. Fredrik and
Henrietta took up residence at 659 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City.
During this time Fredrik kept in contact with his brother Valder
who also lived in Jersey City. At the time of their marriage
Fredrik was age 33 yrs. and Henrietta was age 25 yrs. Henrietta's
Birthday was 15 october, 1891.
On April 12, 1917 Henrietta gave birth to a boy, their first
child, he was named Walther Fredrick;
Walter after Fredrik's brother Valder
* and Fredrik after the childs father. There were two other
children born to Fredrik and Henrietta, Andrew
Swanson Quistgaard was born on 26 October, 1920, he was named
after Henrietta's father. Arthur Edwin
Quistgaard was born on 13 March, 1924, he was named after a
close friend of Fredriks who was a Deacon and Sunday School
Superintendant ata the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church.
Fredrik was also a Deacon of the Church.
Following Arthur's birth, Henrietta became ill, and her illness
became worse as the years went by, finally after three months in
the hospital Henrietta died on 19 May, 1927 from a Cardio
Vascular diseas. For about a year Fredrik, with the help of
neighbors and his sister in law Emelie Thylen, tried to keep a
home together for Walter, Andrew and Arthur. Then in early 1929
Fredrik married Elizabeth Eriekson to
be his second wife, and to help take care of the tree children.
However the marriage only lasted five years, as Elizabeth took
ill and died in June of 1934. Leaving Fredrik a widower for the
second time. But now with the children a bit older it was not as
difficult to maintain a home for the children by himself, which
is what Fredrik did.
In 1938 Andrew graduated High School, and took a job as an
apprentice butcher, Arthur was still in High School, Walther was
working and going to school for advanced studies. Then on 23
November 1939 Walther was married to Hilda
Bylsma a girl of Holland decent, and Walther and Hilda went
to live in their own home. In january of 1942 Andrew enlisted in
the U. S. Navy, he served aboard the U.S.S. Ranger an aircraft
carrier as a Gunners Mate. In September of 1942 Arthur enlisted
in the Navy, he served aboard the U.S.S. Bronson a 2400 class
destroyer as Gun Pointer in a gun turret. In 1943 Walther
enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the C.b's. the Navy's
construction branch as a Petty Officer. Fredrik still kept up the
home. Then on 26 December 1943 Arthur was killed in action when
his ship was under air attack and sunk, his body was never
recovered.
In December of 1947 Andrew was married to Ruth
Wenstrom a girl of Swedish-Finnish decent. Andrew and Ruth
went to live in their own home. In 1948 Fredrik retired and lived
with Walther and Hilda, and their children, William, Arthur and
Peter. In early June of 1952 Fredrik became ill and was
hospitalized then on 30 June 1952.
Fredrik died of Artieriosclorosis, while in a coma. Sixteen days
after his 70th birthday. He had a Christian Burial and was laid
to rest in the Greenwood Cemetary in Brielle. New Jersey.
